Although recently formed, the Meningitis Action team has been helping children and young adult meningitis survivors for over 20 years.
Unfortunately many young meningitis sufferers lose limbs due to the rapid onset of the disease. Often there can be long delays before prosthetic limbs can be provided by the NHS and only one type of prosthesis is available whereas we can fund bespoke and specialised requirements, free of charge.
The WHO says that 90% of the world’s amputees cannot obtain or afford the needed prosthetics, Meningitis Action is addressing this problem in the UK.
We are liaising with local and regional hospitals to supply diagnostic equipment where needed to enable rapid diagnosis and so prevent loss of limbs and the need for prostheses.
Many of us at Meningitis Action have had direct experience of this potentially fatal disease. For many years we have campaigned and lobbied the government to roll out Meningitis B and C immunisations for all children and the result of our success is that many lives have been saved.
You can see pictures of some of the children who have been victims of amputations due to meningococcal septicaemia and have benefitted from prosthetic limbs and, thanks to the generosity of donors, we continue to raise funds in order to help more children in this way.
As children rapidly outgrow their prosthetic limbs we are working on the possibility of recycling these once they are no longer of use.

MISSION STATEMENT
Meningitis Action is a not for profit organisation and our aims and objectives are to help in the ongoing fight against meningitis and septicaemia. We achieve this by raising funds from both the general public and corporate donors.
We liaise with local hospitals and support groups to provide state of the art
prosthetics and also assist in any way we can to improve the quality of life of those who have suffered and undergone traumatic medical procedures. The rehabilitation of those affected and support to families and carers is also one of our main objectives.
